The problem is, however, that the children are the only eyewitnesses. Because of this, its important to determine the difference between reality and a childs "false memory." In their paper and study, "Drawing Out Childrens False Memories," by Deeryn Strange, Maryanne Garry and Rachel Sutherland, the researchers attempt to determine if drawing, if used as a tool for recall, helps determine reality or whether it simply reinforces false memories. The reason for the study, according to the authors, is concern that research suggests that the so-called "draw and tell" interviews, as their called, end up promoting more false reporting - they quote from various studies such as Bruck et al. (2000) and Gross et al. (2000) that when asked to recreate events through drawing, the children ended up actually embellishing the stories, rather than simply repeating the facts as they might have remembered them. In another study, even when parents insisted that what happened in a picture drawn was false, children opted to stand by their stories - mainly because the children imagined they were real experiences. The authors of this study point out the idea that SMF outlines many reasons contributing to such false memories - one being that detailing such memories actually makes them real.
