suggest that pregnancy wasnt (or isnt) a big deal, but it is to suggest that unprotected sex these days yields a great many more consequences then whether to get married or give a baby up for adoption. A variety of sexually transmitted diseases, such as herpes, can scar a teen for life. Furthermore, the spread of HIV/AIDS can ultimately end a teens life all too early. If nothing else, a teen who acquires AIDS/HIV will be dependent on a cocktail of drugs for the rest of his/her life. Though schools are doing their best to educate teens on the risks and dangers of unprotected sex, this isnt enough. Advertising needs to be introduced as well, to consistently reinforce the message. Parents also need to consistently pound it into their kids heads that unprotected sex can mean the spread of diseases. Teachers involved in sex education and health education these days are doing an admirable job. Theyre trying to each a somewhat uncomfortable topic to teens (who arent really known for listening 100% of the time in class anyway). But the problem with teaching such things in the school are the lack of credibility of the person delivering the message (the teachers probably dont have HIV/AIDS and if they do, this isnt something they would likely share with their students), and how the topic is presented. Its likely presented in clinical, cold terms, which isnt the best way to reach a teenager, whose hormones are going wild, and who doesnt really care about the need to use a condom (or not to engage in sex in the first place).
