Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 20 page literature review of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and its associated Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and the link to intelligence. ADHD and ADD have been misunderstood, misdiagnosed, over-medicated, under-treated and all other aspects of being poorly handled over the years. Despite all of the attention it has gained for itself, relatively few researchers have attempted to make any direct correlation between intelligence and the presence of ADHD. It appears that efforts in this direction get bogged down in the insufficiencies of measuring intelligence. Nevertheless, several effects of ADHD can be related to affecting intelligence as it is defined and measured. The fact that measured intelligence values can be altered with attention to language and communication complicates any effort to make a direct correlation between ADHD and intelligence. So many other factors may be operational but unidentified that establishing that link in a valid manner is difficult. It still is a worthwhile effort, however, for greater understanding of ADHD can assist in lessening its detrimental effects. Bibliography lists 18 sources.

Prevalence Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with ADHD, so many in fact that there are those claiming that ADHD is being grossly overdiagnosed and that it surely does not exist in the proportions that psychologists, health care professionals and even the lay press claim. The response of those involved is that the condition is so pervasive and varied that its many forms and degrees are just now being understood. One 55 year old man recently was diagnosed with ADHD, and only because one of his twin sons had been evaluated for the disorder. On medication now, he says that he is more focused than at any other time of his life. He always wanted to do well, but always seemed unable to perform to standard: My earliest recognition of an attention issue might have been as early as high school. I didnt seem to be performing at the potential that some of my teachers had anticipated. There was a question about, "You seem bright enough, you seem capable of doing the work, but for some reason the work isnt getting done; what is the issue?" It was not an intellectual problem ...
