it is referred to as a childhood disease, yet many people do not grow out of ADHD. One factor that seems to have a great deal to do with
ADHD is very low birth weight (VLBW). Certain stimulant medication is given for ADHD, although in some instances other medications are given.
It is apparent that in most cases the same type and dosage of medication should be given to both children and adolescents. Medication is an important factor in living
with ADHD. There are several symptoms associated with ADHD, they include antisocial behavior, conduct disorder, substance abuse, family disturbance, and negative academic and social outcomes.
In fact, these become more marked as the child becomes older. The ADHD adolescent also has lowered self-esteem. This is a particularly important secondary consequence of ADHD.
As the child with ADHD becomes older, he/she more prominently exhibits depression, anxiety, unstable mood, and other internalizing disorders. ADHD is not fatal.
Many adolescents have ADHD and because of parent support and education, medication, and the appropriate placement in school the child is able to cope. These are important factors
in the life of dealing with an adolescent who has ADHD, and for the adolescent to be able to deal with the disorder. Volumes of research has been done
on ADHD. According to Botting and her colleagues (1997), there is a connection between very low birth weight (VLBW) children and ADHD.
