known as New Spain. It had once been a vast landscape with little except a few Plains Indian huts until some Franciscan monks decided to establish a few missions
in an effort to introduce Christianity to the primitive masses. My great-grandfather, Juan I relocated from Spain with his wife and two sons during the seventeenth century and my
family has been deeply rooted here ever since, as have been my mother Magdalenas clan, the Santiagos. During the 1830s, the land now known as the Texas Territory was
in considerable turmoil thanks to the leader of our mother country, Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. To Santa Anna, Texas meant nothing except a large piece of
ground Mexico had no particular use for but didnt want any other country to have either. My father had no love for Santa Anna and often referred to him
in the most disparaging of terms, calling him an "opportunist" and "egocentric" (Weil PG). Santa Anna never cared about the people of Texas; he was only interested in solidifying
his own power base. To him, we werent Mexicans; we were foreigners and therefore inferior. My father would delight in telling me the story of my birth even though
he wasnt home for the blessed event of his first child and only son. He had joined a local militia of Tejanos or Mexican Americans who had organized a
revolt against Santa Annas oppressive policies. You could say I was born with a bang and not a whimper as my date of birth is March 2, 1836, which
