Only a very small number of the victims were military, the overwhelming majority were civilian and more than two-thirds of whom were in the World Trade Center Towers and surrounding buildings in New York City. Citizens of 90 countries in addition to America died that day in New York City (Associated Press, September, 2006). Of the 19 hijackers, 15 were from Saudi Arabia, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Egypt and one was from Lebanon (Wikipedia, 2006). All were members of the terrorist organization Al Queda (Wikipedia, 2006). It was estimated the planning and execution of this attack cost between $400,000 and $500,000 (Wikipedia, 2006). Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al Queda, subsequently said, "Terrorism against America deserves to be praised because it was a response to injustice, aimed at forcing America to stop its support for Israel, which kills our people" (Wikipedia, 2006). He would later also admit that he was directly involved in those attacks (Wikipedia, 2006). According to different sources within the U.S. government, the reasons for the attack were set out in a 1998 fatwa written by bin Laden and comrades (Wikipedia, 2006). The fatwa specifies American crimes and sins as: supporting Israel, military occupation of the Arabian Peninsula and aggression against the Iraqi people (Wikipedia, 2006). The Persian Gulf War, including bombing of and its subsequent sanctions against Iraq were also cited as reasons for hostility and aggression against the United States (Wikipedia, 2006). In other documents and statements, bin Laden said that he wanted to punish and inflict economic damage on America (Wikipedia, 2006).
