In THE case of WWI and WWII the reality possesses many unique circumstances and developments but the core of the struggle is essentially the same as it once was when the world was less populated. I. World War I During the early part of the century Austria-Hungary believed that the newly enlarged, Russian-backed, Serbia was a paramount threat to its security. This was because Serbian military intelligence supported anti-Habsburg groups and activities which were a reality in Bosnia Hercegovina. The heir to the Habsburg crown was Franz Ferdinand. He was a man of some great importance and when he and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, by Bosnian nationalists, it was assumed that Serbian conspiracy was even more of a reality. The pretext to the war that followed was weak but inevitable. The idea of war with Serbia was not new to Vienna and with Germany apparently willing to assist them in this endeavor, war was the next logical step. "On July 23, Austria-Hungary presented Serbia with an ultimatum designed to be rejected. The key demands were that Serbia suppress anti-Habsburg activities, organizations, and propaganda and that Habsburg officials be permitted to join in the Serbian investigation of the assassination" (Anonymous Austria cstdy:@field(DOCID+at0040)). Serbias response was negative while at the same time they appeared conciliatory. Apparently there reaction mattered little for Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28. This was done without any further consultations with Germany (Anonymous Austria cstdy:@field(DOCID+at0040)). The German and Austrian-Hungarian troops gained many military victories in the east, during the spring of 1915.
