sports, and particularly womens basketball is often relegated to only certain channels and at times which certainly arent favorably comparable with the time slots given to mens sports. The disparity between the media attention given to female athletes and male athletes is also large. Unfortunately the treatment of womens sports is only a reflection of the treatment of women by society as a whole. Womens issues and activities have historically been, and are even today, considered for the most part as being inferior in some way to mens issues and activities. According to the generally accepted ideas of society, a woman is expected to behave differently in society than is a man (Wilkins, 1995). A woman has a certain place in society and when she deviates from that place she becomes something of a social outcast or at least is somewhat frowned on by mainstream America. A womans traditional roles, according to societal norms, are those of homemaker, wife, and mother; not doctor, lawyer and astronaut and certainly not that of professional athlete. Society has a way of keeping an individual within the roles it expects of them. In the case of women athletes, this can manifest itself in numerous ways, each as tragic and as unfair as the other. Women who play in the eight-team Womens National Basketball Association and the American Basketball League have exerted just as much effort at getting there, and staying there, as have their male equivalents.
