competition are good for young women (1995). While many young girls are raised with bows and Barbie dolls, often girls interested in sports are not encouraged. They were, in past
generations, called Tom Boys. Today, while little girls can join Little League they are often outnumbered by their male teammates. And when a girl does express an intense interest, unless
it is a particularly feminine sport such as figure skating or gymnastics, she is often looked down upon. Her mother would probably prefer her that she be sewing her prom
dress rather than face the obstacles society puts in front of her. This paper will show that media portrayal of female athletes is destructive to their self-esteem. Further, studies indicate
that sports attract people of lower morality and that males in particular tend to wield the power that the status of being a sports figure gives them. This use of
control is particularly directed towards women. While studies show the sports arena as a dismal place where women should fear to tread, there is a positive correlation between physical fitness
and self-esteem. Women should be encouraged, at very young ages, to participate in sports despite the negativity surrounding it. Unfortunately today, media portrays female athletes in an unfair way. Few
can identify with Navritolovas experiences as they do not see the positive connection between achievement and sport (Widenhaus,1995). Few can work in the limelight with blinders on. Sports
commentator Ben Wright, who had incidentally been suspended, characterized professional female golfers as lesbians and commented about the inability of women with "big boobs" to play that game (Lopiano,1996a 74).
