One critic notes that "the sonnets offer many and various problems; they cannot have been written all at one time, and most scholars set them within the period 1593-1600 (William Shakespeare). One of these poems is The Phoenix and the Turtle. The following paper examines this poem, what critics have to say about it, and how it may have related to his life. The Phoenix and the Turtle In all honesty, the period in time wherein this poem was written remains much of a mystery to historians. Much of the information about Shakespeare and his life seems to halt during the years when he wrote and perhaps performed in the theater. This particular poem is presumed to have been written in 1600-1601 (William Shakespeare). Through historical research it has been noted that "One striking piece of evidence that Shakespeare began to prosper early and tried to retrieve the family fortunes and establish its gentility is the fact that a coat of arms was granted to John Shakespeare in 1596" (William Shakespeare). Then, in 1597 he purchased a very large home in Stratford (William Shakespeare). From about 1594 onward it is believed that he played with a group of actors, however: "written records give little indication of the way in which Shakespeares professional life molded his marvellous artistry. All that can be deduced is that for 20 years Shakespeare devoted himself assiduously to his art, writing more than a million words of poetic drama of the highest quality" (William Shakespeare).
