contemporary global athletics (Crowther, 2001); with the entire world rallying around this original form of football, the World Cup has taken on an entirely new look by adding women to
its long and illustrious history. Many who do not know the history of soccer believe that the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)
was actually formed in the 1930s; however, 1904 represents the true development of what has come to be the worlds most revered sport. The thirty years it took for
soccer to actually formulate itself as a real international competition indicated that the sport had not yet been accepted in such a capacity as to grow beyond its restrictive roots.
The sport was played in the Olympic Games; however, there was significant tension between the Olympic Committee and FIFA as to which group should oversee the soccer tournament.
Inasmuch as FIFA was "the highest footballing authority and so should run a tournament claiming to be the biggest soccer event in the world" (Anonymous #3, 2002), there came to
be a grand shake up when a number of top nations withdrew from the 1928 Olympics. This unexpected action caused FIFA to make a decision that would influence the
game of soccer from that point forward. II. GENDER ISSUES IN SPORTS Among the variables that separate males from females in competitive
sports is the natural disposition for physical stamina and ability. The composition of the female body, while similar in appearance, is quite different in strength, vigor and overall endurance.
