People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them." "Trapped in History" It would seem to be a difficult issue to accept that we may in fact be trapped in history. As messy human animals we like to perceive ourselves as having the ability to make more choices than perhaps we really do. The idea of history being trapped in us is a little tricky, and less likely for us to realize. This might mean that we may not recognize the patterns in ourselves which we have obtained from our primary care givers, thus leading us to repeat those same patterns ourselves, and possibly instill them in our children. Personal Story I think the personal story that I know best about someone being trapped in history is that of my Aunt Susan-not that I was supposed to know the story. But I overheard parts of it and did not figure out the rest until I was much older. And then Susan was my mothers favorite sister, so I might have heard the two of them talking more than they thought I did. What was going on in the world was the beginning of World War II, and Susan discovered that she was pregnant after Harry left for the War. It sounds like a soap opera because Harry did not return from the war. The womans whole life at that time was changed because of attitudes about premarital sex, pregnancy and raising a child. She could not be honest about a great portion of her life, but had to make up parts. She and my mother would laugh to themselves; but it didnt very seem that Susan laughed very much by herself. ...
