endeavors in film production. As would be imagined, the funds available to these film productions are incredibly limited, forcing these groups to focus on issues that address reality. These films are more prone to possessing intellectually aesthetic elements through their address of issues such as political and historical realities. They focus on realism in a very raw and gritty manner for the most part, presenting the viewer with images that are far more impacting and more realistic than traditional Hollywood film. In the following paper we present an examination of what it is that is important about the gritty realism portrayed in Third World film, thus providing the foundation for the artistic presentation found in such film. In addition we present an examination of what goes on in the Havana Film Festival, which is a forum for many Third World films. Lastly we discuss some of the work of one Cuban Director, Tomas Gutierrez Alea, who is renowned for his artistic films. As such he serves to represent what is truly powerful about many Third World films. The Gritty Realism of Third World Film There is little doubt that the Third World is a region filled with harsh realities. Starvation and oppression are a daily event, often being disregarded by many of the citizens as well as the general public, especially the wealthy public. One individual, Clare short, indicates that it is important to examine how the third World is presented. The portrayal "of developing countries as full of constant suffering, failure and famine, as always in crisis. She has also been critical of the mutual parasitism of the media and the fund-raiser as this can lead to terrible pessimism about the possibility of progress" (Moore 21).
