their own evaluative decisions based upon the evidence and to enjoy the games for what they are, not for what someone else makes them out to be.
Sport has a dark side though and much of it is indeed the fault of the media. For an athlete to be regarded as good...for a coach to be regarded
as effective (and to keep his job for that matter!) -- they must be well-covered in the media. If the common view of the press is that a player is
lousy, -- he will be accepted as lousy. Worse yet, a player who constantly reads in the newspapers that (s)he is lousy will be less able and less likely to
recover from a "slump" (Dvorak, 1994). The media puts pressure on athletes to perform and when they do not, it can actually act as a depressing agent.
The business of sports itself is plagued with problems that inherently enable the media to have a corruptive role. Big time sport has corrupted academic institutions and the media
has even made college athletes suffer from the negative effects of bad or unfair press. Coaches are known to mildly bribe the press and even athletes because there exists so
much incentive for them to win. If the press werent there, such incentive would be enough-- it would be a job-related effort. But with the medias existence, coaches and their
teams have to look good for the entire population of viewers. A bad move or an act of poor sportsmanship becomes a national embarrassment. Inherently, the press coverage of something
