honor Thanksgiving, the holiest of the holy days in the religion of America. In the south where the weather is mild, masses mill around small courthouse lawns and large city parks. Up north, where the weather is colder, groups migrate to heated school gymnasiums and civic centers, whichever proves large enough to hold the flock of worshippers. A large crowd gathers around the Lincoln Memorial to pay homage to its namesake, Saint Abraham Lincoln. Services are opened with a variety of selected passages from the sacred teachings of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, or portions of "I Have a Dream", the divine words of St. Martin Luther King. Sermons are ended with rousing group renditions of "America the Beautiful" and "My Country Tis of Thee" (Royce 05B). The scene as depicted above was what theologian Will Herberg referred to as "The American Way of Life" in 1955 and what was called an "elaborate and well-institutionalized civil religion in America" in 1967 by Robert Bellah, sociologist (Herberg PG; Bellah PG; Royce 05B). It describes a trend in American religion 2 that has increased dramatically in the past fifty years and involved all of Americas foremost religious organizations, among them the American Lutheran Church (Royce 05B). The history of the conventional Lutheran Church date back to the sixteenth century when Protestant reformer Martin Luther recognized the fact that basic beliefs in his religion could not be reconciled with the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. Although many parallels in faith existed between the two churches, the major difference existed in the fact that the Lutherans, as they came to be called, believed that mans salvation lay solely in faith and that this salvation could be achieved through the understanding of Gods favor. ...
