Civil War General William T. Sherman uttered those immortal words, "War is hell," it has been widely acknowledged that nobody likes war, military personnel, soldiers and public alike. However,
World War II was a so-called popular war. After all, the Japanese bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor without provocation. America didnt plunge headlong into war
as they had during World War I, war plunged into it. It is recommended that the student writing on such a topic consider that war has always been a
popular film theme because it can showcase a top box-office star to his most heroic advantage. After December 7, 1941, Hollywood movies were, largely, propaganda efforts which encouraged public
support in the war effort through active participation both at home and abroad. Most of these films featured the heroic exploits of military commander John Wayne, a man who
never saw one day of combat in real life. When the war ended, Hollywood continued making war films, this time concentrating upon the returning soldiers re-entry into American society.
Some of the films were clich?, but some, like The Best Years of Our Lives, were inspired and hold up well even today. After World War II, Americas glory
days on the battlefield seemed to be but a dim memory. The Korean War was Americas first unpopular war where there were no victors, and when President Eisenhower sent
a small group of military advisors to a small island in southeast Asia called Laos, most Americans had never even heard of Vietnam and had no clue where it was
located. However, during the next 30-some years, this was about to change as America fought the costliest and most unpopular war of its history in the jungles of South
