A 7 page paper discussing the nature of the original Olympic Games and their importance to the Greek culture. The Olympic Games after which the modern Games are patterned have come to us as a model reported only in fragments that have been widely scattered and at times contradictory. Though we cannot know all of the details of the Games as they were held in ancient Greece, we can surmise many points from the information we have and relate the importance of the Games to the higher ideals of Greek culture. the Greek plays. Though we cannot know all of the details of the Games as they were held in ancient Greece, we can surmise many points from the information
we have and relate the importance of the Games to the higher ideals of Greek culture. The Games Origins The original games
occurred over a period of 1200 years, and it is from the original incarnation that we have derived the current schedule of holding the modern Games every four years.
The Greeks held only one meeting of athletes during their four-year rotation, but the addition of events was a common feature of the Greek Olympics. Modern Games include many
more sports than did the original, but the method of adding events was established thousands of years ago. It is generally accepted now
that the first Olympiad was held in 776 BC (Polidoro and Simri 41). This year, at least, is the first in which there is recorded evidence of the existence
of the Games. Whether they existed before that year is unknown, and there was debate many years ago as to whether 776 BC could be considered as a proper
date of the origin of the Games, but its acceptance as being the beginning of the Games is acceptable to most historians now. The Site of the Games
