properly! Society has been historically engaged in a tug-of-war between two polar opposites, men and women. Unfortunately, contemporary Great Britain continues
to be defined in terms of gender. It determines preconceived ideas about how people should act, dictates position on the socioeconomic ladder, and in access to participation and power.
In order to gain a true understanding of how gender defines and limits British society, it is important to first define the concept of gender. Author Michael S.
Kimmel observed, "Gender is not a thing that one possesses, but a set of activities that one does... Women and men are distinct social groups, constituted in concrete, historically changing--and
generally unequal--social relationships" (p. 106). Gender, in a contemporary context, is clearly not simply a physiological construct, but also a sociological one as well. British society has always
been a patriarchy where the strong men have dominated all aspects, while the women have considerably lesser role, bordering upon subservience. This inequality is based upon the perception that
they are the weaker gender. Feminist theory is an attempt to break through established conventions and depict society as it actually is, not as the gendered stereotypes of the
patriarchy present it to be. There can be no better example of how women have been historically denied opportunities in British society than in the area of sports.
