Proponents of the "dead white male" concentration argue that whether one likes it or not, sexism has for the most part prohibited women from full participation in the epic events of our nations history, and therefore, when we study the signing of the Declaration of Independence or the ratification of the Constitution, it is the deeds of men we study. Certain individual women have made their mark on history - Harriet Tubman, for example, or Amelia Earhart -- but in proportion to the numbers of men making similar contributions, womans role is relatively small. However, this is a very shortsighted way of looking at history. It implies that the activities that are most worthy of study are those which have historically been culturally important to men, and which men have played the central role - namely, warfare and politics - and virtually ignores areas in which women have always had a significant impact in this country: economics and culture. Nonetheless, it should be obvious that warfare and politics have, in fact, made up a large part of the way history continues to be taught to the young. There are whole other spheres of life in which women have made consistent and significant impact from the colonial period forward, and which have actually altered the course of American history, particularly in the first half of this century. Three of these spheres of life which have proven to be extremely significant were the growth of consumerism, the increased demand for and reliance on contraceptives, and the increasing number of women in the workplace.
