Sonnet 23 and Sonnet 147, focus on the dark side of love and the excruciating torment that it can bring when love is unrequited or undeserved. These poems are different
in context, as Sonnet 23 still holds out hope for the poet while Sonnet 147 contemplates the utter ruin of an affair. However, they are similar in their construction and
in the manner in which Shakespeare portrays the pain of love as prominent them in both works. The contextual analysis focuses on Shakespeares use of figurative language, where these images
occur in the poems and what purposes they fulfill. First quatrain -- Sonnet 23 As an unperfect actor on the stage Who with his fear is put besides his
part, Or some fierce thing replete with two much rage, Whose strengths abundance weakens his own heart (Sonnet 23 lines 1-4). In these opening lines, Shakespeare uses
figurative language to paint a vivid image of a man filled with such intense emotion that he finds it difficult to express himself. He uses the metaphor of comparing himself
to an actor who is so filled with stage fright that he forgets his lines (lines 1-2). But this Shakespeare goes on to emphasize that the emotion that makes his
tongue slow to respond is more than fear, it is also rage (line 3). This rage is so intense that it weakens his heart, that is, his very core. As
this indicates, Shakespeares use of figurative language in this quatrain sets the stage for presenting a situation in which the speaker is obviously caught in a highly emotional situation that
