Just two or three decades ago, hardly anyone watched female college basketball games and coaches of womens teams were frequently unpaid (Ruffle, 2005). Figure skaters and tennis players were the rare women athletes who received television coverage (Ruffle, 2005). Today, the situation is far different, as womens sports, as long-established sports, such as womens professional golf and tennis are joined by strong newcomers, such as basketball and soccer (Ruffle, 2005). Within the realm of organized sports, male or female, motivation and success and intrinsically tied factors. All athletes must perform to the maximum of their ability in anxiety-producing situations (Hanton and Connaughton, 2002). Research from the 1990s has suggested that the athletes who have the most "confidence in their ability to control themselves and the environment," that is goal attainment, will experience less anxiety (Hanton and Connaughton, 2002, p. 87). This observation brings up questions relative to the relationship between confidence, motivation and success.
