8,000 hate crime incidents. Eight-thousand hate crime incidents are about one hate crime incident per hour. And yet even this disturbing number significantly underestimates the true level of hate
crimes. Many victims do not report such crimes, and police departments do not always recognize, appropriately categorize or adequately report hate crimes (Holder PG). According to FBI statistics, 75
percent of racially-motivated hate crimes target African Americans. Obviously, and despite the supposed best efforts of political and community leaders to foster tolerance and understanding, deep-seated racial tensions continue to
plague the United States. What seems to exemplify racism in America is the fact that in, literally, thousands of towns, and cities, throughout America, racism something much more subtle and
far more pervasive than the heinous crimes reported on the evening news. There are the uncounted and subtle discrimination and slights that African Americans, and millions of other Americans
of color experience, but Americans of what is touted as "mainstream" Western European Anglo-Saxon heritage rarely notice. "So subtle is the color of racism in America, so faint on the
surface -- but a hue that stains the essence of life as it penetrates the souls of those commonly referred to as the subservient race. What color is the color
of racism in America? Almost oblivious, some would say, to the naked eye, but when held up to the light of justice and plain human decency, racism can allow one
