The teams then were Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers and Quebec Bulldogs. Toronto Arenas (later Maple Leafs) were brought in as a fifth team in December. Montreal won the league but Toronto won the first Stanley Cup after have defeated Montreal in the final (the two best clubs in the league went to the final). In the twenties came Hamilton Tigers in 1921 instead of Quebec, (but they dropped out in 1924), Boston Bruins in 1923 (the first American team) , Pittsburgh Pirates in 1924, New York Americans in 1924, New York Rangers in 1927, Chicago Blackhawks in 1927 and Detroit Cougars (later Red Wing) as new teams. Also, in 1927 they began to play a 44-game season with a Canadian and an American Division. The twenties was dominated by Ottawa which won four times (1920,1921,1923 and 1927). The two Divisions were going on until 1938. Then they played one Division because many teams had dropped out; first Pittsburgh dropped out in 1931 after have moved to Philadelphia, then Ottawa was transferred to St. Louis in 1934 but they also just played one season. Despite that, Montreal Maroons had to shuttle down in 1938 because the Canadians got all the support in Montreal and in 1941. New York Americans also dropped out after have changed name to Brooklyn Americans. After that it only remained six teams: Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks which is called "The Original Six" they were the only NHL teams for 25 years.
