One of the most interesting of these models, however, is that of Fred Fiedler. Rather than assuming that there was only one best leadership style, Fiedlers contingency model of leadership postulates that leadership effectiveness is based on "situational contingency", i.e. that in order to be most effective the situation had to be favorable to the leadership style being utilized (Biographical Dictionary of Management, 2001). Some authors criticize Fiedlers model which they interpret as not allowing change in the leader himself (Atoine, 2001). This criticism is unjust in may respects, however. Fiedlers model recognizes, of course, that not all situations will be favorable and either the situation or the leadership style must be changed in order to correspond with one another (Biographical Dictionary of Management, 2001). In other words, effective leaders have what is termed "situational control", the ability to change the situation according to their own strengths and weaknesses (Biographical Dictionary of Management, 2001). Such changes could include drastic measures such as changing the organizational hierarchy or simply beefing up the aspects of leadership which are deficit in a particular situation (Biographical Dictionary of Management, 2001). In essence, Fiedlers model promotes teamwork in all aspects of life, in the workplace, in sports, and in all other situations which require leadership.
