A recent study illustrated several points that address why those with little or no previous sporting experience tend to refrain from participating in any swimming activity: * past, poor school and family preparation to participate in recreation * complete lack of, or inadequate, sport experience from the time of youth, which could in some way create strong foundation for the present physical activity * low awareness of women as far as the health effects "sport for all" can have throughout ones hard living conditions, when sport and recreation are perceived as luxury and not as something relevant * difficult access to sport centers and programs designed for women of various ages (Wolanska 81-90). In conjunction with this are the inherent differences between younger and older women, such as physical condition, personal responsibilities and the amount of time available to dedicate to such activities as swimming. "As women age, it takes more than just motivation to maintain healthy levels of physical activity" (Coe PG). Under the category of physiological aspects, one might readily apply the elements of nature versus nurture as a means by which to explain the inherent differences between male and female swimmers. Among the variables that separate men from women in the sport of swimming is the natural disposition for physical stamina and ability.
