links between parenting styles and the different areas of adolescent development. This includes the area of academic achievement. Research data on the link between parenting styles and adolescent
psychosocial adjustment, well being, self-concept, delinquency, and drug abuse have been accumulated (Shek, 1997, PG). Family functioning influences adolescent psychological well being and problem behavior.
This includes adolescent identity, suicide, psychopathology, and proneness to delinquency. Some theorize that poor family functioning is related to elevated levels of substance abuse and smoking. Others
theorize that family functioning scores do not differentiate children in intrusive and less intrusive treatment programs. Therefore, the link between family functioning and adolescent if far from conclusive (Shek, 1997,
PG). A family environmental factor that deserves further attention is parent-adolescent conflict. Parent-adolescent conflict can be regarded as a stressor that affects the emotional
