life, leading them to a more enlightened existence due to the realizations made, and there are epiphanies that do not necessarily alter ones life dramatically but rather merely offer new perspectives from which one can address life and existence. In Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" we have an epiphany that is incredibly life changing, creating a new and enlightened man where a cruel and frightened man once existed. In Shakespeares "Twelfth Night" we are presented with an epiphany that is life altering in many ways, but yet an epiphany that primarily only clears up misunderstandings. Thought Shakespeares comedy does offer us characters whose lives are changed, their changes do not necessarily involve their inherent character. Bearing this in mind the following paper examines the two stories separately as they involve epiphanies. The paper then provides a comparison and contrast of the two. A Christmas Carol While there is a gradual progression towards the ultimate epiphany in the story of Scrooge, it is not until the final spirit visits him that all of his lessons come together, instilling in him a powerful understanding of how his entire life has been perhaps nothing short of selfish and evil. In the final visit from a spirit that shows him his future all of his lessons come into play and culminate to create a powerful epiphany. We note some of this in the following excerpt: "Spirit. he cried, tight clutching at its robe hear me. I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse.
