the first reaction is "those guys get away with anything." Its true; in many regards, professional sports players (and most on the college level) tend to be given a free
pass when it comes to rules. In todays society, there is a need for ethics, discipline and sportsmanship in the world of sports. And the one case that illustrates this
more than perhaps any concerns Latrell Sprewell, an NBA player who was with the Golden State Warriors in California during the late 1990s, and the teams coach, P.J. Carlesimo.
In 1997, Sprewell, who was known for his temper, choked Carlesimo during a practice, then returned 20 minutes later to continue assaulting the
coach (Puma, 2007). David Stern, commissioner of the NBA, suspended Sprewell for 82 games (Puma, 2007). The suspension was reduced to 68 games by an arbitrator (Puma, 2007). The incident
cost Sprewell $6.4 million and a shoe deal with Converse (Puma, 2007). Sprewell also sued both the Warriors and the NBA for the loss of salary (Puma, 2007). Sprewell was
traded to the New York Knicks following his reinstatement (Puma, 2007). But when Sprewell was questioned about this on "60 Minutes,"
he shrugged off the incident claiming "I wasnt choking P.J. that hard. I mean, he could breathe" (Puma, 2007). Sprewell, who
grew up in a troubled home, has shown indications toward violence even prior to the Carlesimo incident including three months under house arrest for a reckless driving incident and reporting
to camp one year with a broken hand without informing the Warriors (Puma, 2007). He was also charged for driving with a suspended license and speeding, but those charges were
