Through "experiential introspection" (Resnick, 1997, p. 463), psychology eventually came to represent the very essence of mental performance. Throughout history, there have been a number of modifications that have "altered the direction and focus" (Resnick, 1997, p. 463) of psychology as a discipline, including the importance of Lightner Witmer, considered to be the first patient of psychological treatment. As the discipline continued forward, these constant changes were instrumental in establishing psychology as a system of services for treatment. There are myriad issues that have impacted the manner in which this particular discipline has been both received and delivered throughout its growth period, not the least of which include the effects of such events as the World Wars and the expansion of service availability. To be sure, one of the most influential impacts upon the practice of psychology has been health reform, which can be considered a double-edged sword in light of this discipline as a system of services for treatment. It can easily be argued that all the events that have occurred have played "an integral part of the history of psychology as well as the evolution of practice" (Resnick, 1997, p. 463).
