music perhaps the oldest music on which written records exist. According to Chinese tradition, the invention of the first musical instruments are attributed to Fu-hsi, a mythical ruler of the
29th century B.C. The earliest compositions are, therefore, attributed to him or to other early rulers. Unfortunately, manuscripts and instruments from that period no longer exist because in 212
B.C. Shih Huang-ti of the Chin dynasty caused all musical instruments and books to be destroyed and the practice of music was forbidden. Therefore, little is known of the evolution
of chin zither music during the ancient period. In spite of this, certain outlines of Chinese music have been ascertained so that scholars have been able to determine that a
musical tradition did exist. The early development of Chinese popular music reflected the fact that China, as a nation, was home to not only the Han Chinese, but also
a large number of other ethnic groups with distinct cultures. The westward expansion of the Chinese empire during the Tang dynasty (618-906 A.D.) as well as the occasional
waves of invasion and opening of trade routes during the Han dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.) significantly extended cultural contacts. Chinese music was deeply influenced by the aesthetic viewpoints
