Hurricane Hugo came roaring through Puerto Rico, with winds estimated up to 140 miles per hour (Dollarman.com, 2005). At that speed, needless to say, the winds uprooted trees, tore off
roofs and ensured that the northeastern sectors of the island had no electricity for days, and at times, even weeks (Dollarman.com, 2005). In some areas, in fact, it was weeks
before electrical services and power were restored (Dollarman.com, 2005). Damage was estimated from Hugo, in the billions (Dollarman.com, 2005). Less than 10
years later, another hurricane, this one christened Georges, then hit the island, also leaving massive destruction (Dollarman.com, 2005). Then, in 2004, Tropical Storm Jeanne lumbered into Yabucoa, in the eastern
part of the country, then meandered along the coastline, before exiting near Isabela in the north (Dollarman.com, 2005). Though Jeanne didnt destroy trees or roofs, the storm did leave a
great deal of rain, which then turned into flooding, mudslides and fallen trees (Dollarman.com, 2005). Again, power outages and water shortages were reported with this particular storm (Dollarman.com, 2005).
What we just mentioned doesnt even take into account the other natural disasters that hit Puerto Rico -- the earthquakes and the potential
for tsunamis. In short, Puerto Rico, though considered an "island paradise" is rife for all kinds of natural disasters, partly because of
its location in the Caribbean and partly because of its terrain. But through proper emergency preparedness planning and some foresight, these disasters might not cause so much loss of life
