with girls and women playing or participating in strenuous activity. Prior to the late 1970s and early 1980s, society felt that the accepted role of females in society was
not to participate in sports and there were misconceptions about a womans role, her basic needs and her physical capabilities. TITLE IX Federal law which applies to the dispensing of
federal funds also addresses the issue of girls and women full participation in sports programs. Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of
sex in all activities and educational programs which are recipients of federal funds (Co-ed Participation, 2002). This federal law applies to any federal funds which are given to public
elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools and to both public and private universities (Co-ed Participation, 2002). Title IX is also applicable to governmental agencies which include city recreation departments or
non-profit organization that may receive federal funds (Co-ed Participation, 2002). Even if there are instances where Title IX may not apply, or in instances where girls are looking to
play on contact sports teams where there is no single sex team provided, the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution should provide similar equality (Co-ed Participation, 2002). SAFETY STANDARDS AND
REQUIREMENTS The safety standards which are customary for protection of the health and safety of males in sports and competitive athletes should also apply to girls and women. If
the same safety standards are applied to all, there should be no reason that girls and women should not be allowed to participant on the same teams as boys and
men. Competent medical care during all phases of participation would eliminate any possibilities of injury to all players which would include girls and women. If all participants are well
