Gay Discrimination is Wrong

A 6 page research paper/essay that offers a rebuttal to a 1995 essay by Jeff Jordan, a professor of philosophy at the University of Delaware, who argues that, in some circumstances, discrimination against homosexuals is morally and ethically justifiable. Specifically, Jordan argues that it is not only legally permissible but morally permissible, in fact, morally preferable, for the state to maintain prohibitions against same-sex marriage. Close examination of Jordan's argument demonstrates that his position does not hold up under scrutiny. Within the course of Leavitt's narrative, a young man makes the final transition from an insecure adolescent identity toward a more positive fully-adult identity that is inclusive of his sexual orientation. The issues raised by Leavitt provide a rough framework for further discussion about the problems inherent in establishing a sense of an adult-self within the context of alternative sexual orientation. When she used her show as a vehicle for coming out, she not only opened the door for other gays and lesbians to acknowledge their true selves, but her courage also served to fortify the viewing public with a much more grounded perception of an alternative lifestyle that has historically been looked upon with judgment and disdain.
